Calligraphy (from Ancient Greek kalligraphÃa "beautiful writing") is a visual art related to writing. It involves the design and execution of lettering with a pen, ink brush, or other writing instruments. Contemporary calligraphic practice is often defined as "the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner".
Islamic calligraphy has evolved alongside Islam and the Arabic language in the early 7th century. It is a visible expression of the highest art of all, the art of the spiritual world. Beyond religious contexts, Islamic calligraphy is widely used in secular art, architecture, and decoration.
Modern Islamic calligraphy represents a dynamic fusion of traditional elements with contemporary artistic practices, maintaining the spiritual and aesthetic principles of its classical predecessors while embracing new materials, techniques, and conceptual approaches as well as exploring new ways to express the beauty and significance of the Arabic script.
