CAli*MA Art Gallery • Amr Abd El Wahab (Egypt)

Amr Abd El WahabAmr Abd El-Wahab Hussein Hamed was born in Aswan in 1979. Since childhood, he has loved art. After finishing high school, he joined the Faculty of Fine Arts in Luxor, where he was in one of the first student groups, from which he graduated in 2001. Subsequently, Amr travelled abroad and worked as an art education teacher at schools in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. After that, he completed his postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Helwan University in Cairo. He obtained a master's degree in 2016 in contemporary Mexican graphic art.

From 2018 to 2020, Amr worked as an assistant teacher at the Faculty of Specific Education at Aswan University. Currently, he is employed as a graphic engineer in systems and information at the Aswan Governorate Office.

Since Amr Abd El-Wahab graduated from the graphic department, he focused on the art of printing but also turned to landscape painting using various materials, including watercolours, watercolour pens, inks, and soft and oil pastels. Besides that, he made paintings with raw materials, acrylic and oil colours.

Because Amr's wife is Nubian and he lives in the Nubian part of Egypt, Nubia has a fundamental role in his art. It's reflected in all of his artworks, no matter if it's printing works of art or oil paintings and photographs.

Amr about his "Window"

"Each of us has periods of waiting and times of contemplation, moments with the self that we sometimes see in solitude on the balconies and windows of homes. We see old houses with large and huge windows. Each of them bears a different character, inside it lies a different smell and overlooks a beautiful view that is also different from the other. Old and modern windows, all carry an authentic Egyptian character.
The windows are not the same. There is a window that takes us to a view towards strange places, and another window that takes us to intimate places, towards states of homelessness and immersion into the conscience of others.
The windows inside my studio include imaginary windows and real ones, windows while awake and others while sleeping, but one of the most beautiful of them is a window inside a painting.
As much as I like to take off my shoes and ignore myself, and even forget my existence and my worries, I plunge into another world, a beautiful unknown world, full of coincidences and people I do not know and things that are not surrounded by flowers, plants, mountains, valleys, rivers and the outer sky, which I watch around me since my birth.
There are many windows around places, each window has its own spirit and language that speaks to us and dialogues with us. Some of us return to it like the places we resort to after a long absence. For privacy and exclusivity, it dives outside the window of life to reflect to us the spiritual qualities of mixing with the spirit and love associated with place and situation.
This is the philosophy of the artwork, through which I started my new experience in the plastic art, and produced the first artwork in the form that you see in front of you, a window inside a painting."
