CAli*MA Art Gallery • Nermin Gomaah (Egypt)

Egyptian-Turkish artist Nermin Gomaah was born in Alexandria, where she still lives. The city was her inspiration since childhood, making her draw everything she saw: the sea, the sand, scenes of children playing and building sand houses, nature shapes and their colours such as shades of blue, orange, beige and green tints.

Since childhood, Nermin loved everything made by hand, especially drawing and painting. In 1993, she joined the Faculty of Fine Arts of Alexandria University. She has specialised in oil painting and mural painting studying all its techniques and obtained a bachelor’s degree. During her master’s and doctoral degrees studies, Nermin travelled to Turkey many times and joined the University of Istanbul. There, she studied the art of Byzantine mosaic and Ottoman ceramic tiles executed in a very special style. The Turkish culture influenced her art more and more, especially the Ottoman era with its unique flower designs and the spiritual culture of dervishes, and found its way into her drawings, paintings, mosaics and ceramics. The Ottoman Empire also influenced her master’s and doctorate degrees, which she obtained from Alexandria University.

While studying art history, especially ancient Egyptian art, Nermin Gomaah was fascinated by Pharaonic jewellery, its fine rich details and attractive colours. She executed many mosaic artworks using manufactured and natural materials, units of accessory pieces, and so on to produce diverse pieces of art.

Last but not least, Nermin is a mural artist. She executed many works on walls, floors and ceilings using diefefrent materials and techniques, including oil paints, mosaics, glass, and others. she became the head of the Photography Department at the Faculty of Arts and Design of Pharos University and obtained the degree of an Assistant Professor from Pharos University, where she is currently teaching.
